Merry Chirstmas for a Border Terrier

One lucky Border Terrier named Mimm will have a happy Chirstmas after all. Mimm who is blind and partially deaf, was left to die in the cold winter, she was close to death in Chester-le-street when abandoned by her owners in November, but thanks to the great care and kindness of vets and volunteers in County Durham Mimm made a full recovery. But now the vets are to save Mimm again, she is going to have a life saving operation to remove tumours so she can enjoy the rest of her life with her new owner. She is a very lucky girl, we didn't think she was going to make it when she was found, but due to the treatment and tender loving care, she made it through. She was treated for skin and bladder infections.

Why do Dogs Bark

Most dogs will bark, whine or howl at times it's only natural. Dogs vocalize to communicate with humans and to express themselves. Sometimes it’s good that our dogs bark in order to warn us about danger and to protect us from harm. However, extreme barking can be considered a behaviour problem. What is the solution? Well, your dog needs to understand when it’s the right time to bark and when to be quiet, and it's your job to teach this to her. Start working on problem barking as soon as you can. The longer you wait, the harder it gets to control the behaviour. It is a good idea to teach your dog the Speak and Quiet commands. For more information on teaching your dog the Speak and Quiet commands go to our FAQ.

Pets are for life NOT just for Christmas

It is getting close to that time of year when people are thinking what to buy someone for Christmas. Please don't buy a pet as a Christmas gifts for someone you love, it’s irresponsible and unfair for the animal. Come February the rescue centres are full to bursting with all these 'Christmas Presents' once the novelty has worn off. Why not buy everything *but* the pet? Buy the lead, collar, food, bed, toys etc and think more about it after the festive season. You can go out and choose a pet together if you really want one after Christmas. It makes much more sense, and it beats a nervous and scared pup or kitten being manhandled by over excited kids, drunk adults. And do you really want cat/pup pee and poo in amongst the wrapping paper and tinsel? It's not as pretty a picture as you think, is it? So please STOP and think before you buy any animals for as Christmas Present.

Dog grooming is one of your dog's basic needs and an important part of dog ownership. Just like people, dogs need physical maintenance to look and feel their best. Fortunately, dogs do not need to bathe as often as people, but you do need to learn how much grooming your dog actually needs and keep to it. Generally, a dog’s grooming needs depend on the breed and hair type. If your dog has a skin, ear or nail condition, follow your veterinarian’s instructions regarding grooming your dog. It is also important to use the appropriate gromming tools. For more information on some dog grooming basics go to our FAQ. For all gromming products brushes, nail clipers ect, take a look at doggy-b-good online store.

The firework season may go off with a bang for you and your family, but it is estimated that 60 per cent of pets become stressed and fearful while fireworks are going off, often when owners are out of the house enjoying the festivities.
Pet owners should plan in advance and prepare their pets for fireworks, to ensure that the experience is as stress-free as possible.
Why not follow the 'Remember your pets this November' tips in our FAQ, on how to look after your pets during the firework season and help them cope with their fear of loud noises?

Don't Let Your Pet Suffer On The 5th November

November 5th is fast approaching, every year thousands of animals will suffer as a result of fireworks being let off. The country sees a marked rise in pets requiring medication during such stressful times. Animals have very acute hearing, loud bangs and whistles may cause them actual pain in their ears. But by following these simple guidelines your pet need not suffer.
Ensure your pet is safely inside and secure doors, windows and cat flaps
Allow your dog or cat to hide in a place where they feel safe. You can further increase this feeling of security by using a plug-in diffuser which releases canine (D.A.P) or feline (Feliway) pheromones.
Make sure your dog or cat is microchipped or tagged. If they do escape, frightened animals can easily get lost
In the run up to firework season, ensure dogs are used to being taken for walks early in the evening and cats are provided with litter trays
Draw curtains, play music and/or have the TV on to help mask the noise of fireworks
Ignore any fearful behaviour and do not try to comfort your pet. A dog may pick up anxiety and this can make the problem worse. Cats prefer to be left to cope on their own.
Do not punish your pet. This only confirms that there is something to be afraid of
Try not to go out while fireworks are going off. Seeing you acting normally will help your pets feel more settled
For more information on Pets and Fireworks visit our frequently ask question page on our website.

On Friday, 16th October, 2009, my a Great Dane was trotting behind its owner disability trolly when witnesses saw a fair haired girl of about 17-18 years old take the dog. This happened in the Palace area of Canterbury, Kent. Several people witness the girl with the dog. As you can see from the photo, the man is in his 80's and severely disabled. Daisy, the Dane is his closest companion since his wife died a few years ago, and he absolutely dotes on her. They go everywhere together and, because of the unusual sight of a disability trolly and a great Dane together, they are a familiar sight in Canterbury. The owner is distraught by her loss and we are all worried about her safety. Daisy is microchipped. She is about 7 years old and the most beautiful natured dog. A substantial reward is offered for her return or information leading to her return. Please if anyone has any information please contact the owner daughter on suzettebooth@aol.com.

Places To Stay In The UK With Your Dog

I have just come back from a four day trip to the Lake District, where I had a lovely time. The trip was booked in mind with tacking my dog Mica along too. This gave me an idea of adding information on my website about the place where we stayed with Mica, and places we could eat too when traverling around site seeing. There are alot of owners like myself that perfer to go in mini breaks or holidays with their dog/s and are unsure where to stay. There are books out with this information that could help.

But, I want to get feedback from you the reader about places you have stayed with your dog/s, and where you have eaten. I would like you to give each place a mark of 1 to 5 stars, 5 being the best. I will then add each one to my website so other dog owners can benefit from this information. The first place I will add in the next few days is Graysonside where we stayed in the Lake District.

So come on readers email me the best places to stay with dog/s in the UK.

Dogs Smarter Than Toddlers

Us dog owners have know how smart our dogs are for many years, but know finally science has started to catch up. IQ tests have show Border Collies and other bright canines can learn up to 250 words. The canine IQ test results have shown even the average dog has the metal abilities of a 2 year old child. The finding is based on a language development test, showing the average dogs can learn 165 words which is similar to a 2 year olf child, which includs signals and gestures.
Dog where ranked up there with 2 year olds in language, in arithmetic dogs would trump 3 -4 year olds.

The social life of dogs is much more complex more like teenagers at stages, like who is sleeping with who and who is moving up in the pack ect. Coren, who has written a number of books on dogs and dog behavior, will present and overview of various studies on dog smarts at the American Psychological Association's annual meeting in Toronto.
It is a fact that we want insight into how our four legged friends think, to understand their silly ways and irrational behaviors.

Like toddlers dogs have basic emotions, happiness, anger, sadness and disgust. But dogs don;t have the emotion of guilt as some of us thought but found to be doggy fear. Dogs undestand they are being treated fairly, but they don't grasp the concept of equity. In a study which dogs get a treat for giving their paw, the other dog that dose not get rewarded stops performing the trick, and dose not make eye contact with the trainer. Even if one dog is reward with a nice steak while the other dog get a piece cheese, on average the dog getting the cheese dosen't care about the inequality of the treasts.

But for us dog lovers it dosen;t matter if we have a smarty pants, or who made it to the top 10 list of the most popular dog breed in 2008, or who is the sweetest or sociable, or dim wits. There is nothing better than the love we get from our dogs.

Why Dog’s Eat Grass

All dog's eat grass sometimes, some more than others. There are two questions that cross people's minds. Dog dog like the tast of grass? If they do why do they throw it back up?

Dogs explore the world with their nose and mouth, and smelling that sweet grass with all those other smells is very appealing, so why not tasted it. There is a very good reason for the dog's liberal tastes and that because dogs survived by scavenging. If dogs are left to servive on their own they scavenge and if very hungry they would eat anything to survive, even road kill. Its food and they are hungry, so they won;t pass up a good meal. Dogs have been known to root around for tender leafy stalk, roots and even old bones, dogs today haven't changed.

Dogs are omnivores which mean they eat meat as well as plants. They don't really need grassy nutrients becuase most dog food is nutritionally complete. As far as a dog is concerted the instinct tells them grass is good so they eat it. Most dogs will run to the nearest patch when they are feeling unwell. Many dog owners as well as Veterinarians still aren't sure if dogs eat grass becuase their stomachs are upset or they get upset stomachs after they eat the grass.

The texture of the grass once eaten may tickle the dog's tummy and may explain why the dog vomits and brings up whatever was irritating their stomaches if they were feeling unwell inthe first place. There is no reason to worry about your dog eating grass and vomiting it back up. Dogs have been eating grass for thousands of years and there is no evidence to show its bad for them. But we have to remember that some grass has been treated with insecticides and other chemicals.

There will be more information about the affects of dogs eating grass at a later date under FAQ.

If you have any comments on any of our subjects we would love to hear from you.

Dog "Bruce" on Death Row

A dog named Bruce has be condened to die becuase of the way he looks, a statement it was issued by The Kennal Club. The 1991 DDA was amended by the Dangerous Dogs Act 1997. The Act removed the mandatory destruction order provisions of the 1991 Act by giving the courts discretion on sentencing, and re-opened.

It's not fair and we do not understand why a pit bull dog is judge purly on its looks. In some parts of the UK it is regarded as a danger then the same dog would pose in another part.

We the Kennel Club want new legislations but the association in Westminster seems very unwilling to re-examine the current DDA. We will push for the 1997 amendment to apply in Northern Ireland; we encourage all dog owners in Northern Ireland to do the same.

Dog lovers from around the world have reacted in horror to the news of pet dog Bruce. A court has given orders he be destroyed ending a exhaustive twenty one month battle to save his life.

If you have any news on this sad story please let us know.

Dogs Rule ok, 5 Reasons Why

Its sad when dogs make the big headlines when they've done something wrong. There are people who simply do not like dogs and wait for an opportunity to knock them. As dog owners we know the benefits that being a dog owner can bring us. Here are some reasons if you find yourself having to try and explain just how and why dogs have earned their right at our side.

1) Having a dog is good for your health. Dog owner tend to have lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Dog owners tended to generally be in better health than the average person.

2) Dog owners tend to have fewer minor allments and serious medical problems. Also dog can aid recovery from serious illnesses such as heart attacks. And it has now well been proven that dog can spot on coming illness like cancer or an impending seizure. We haven't even begun to scrash the surface of how much dogs can still do to aid human health.

3) Have a pet also help children develop better social skills. Researchers at the University of Leicester has discovered that childeren up to the age of six having pets can speak better, better co-ordination, more confidence and will be less likly to suffer from allergies by the time they start their second year of school.

4) Dog also help us cope with stress. A five year study of 600 children aged 3-18 years showed how children with pets who suffer fromn learning diffculties or come form home where parents have split up, are better to dill with stress than thous who don't have access to the compaionship of a pet.

5) Recent scientific evidence has suggested that pets play an important role in building up the immune system in children. Children who live with a cat or dog in their first year have a lower incidence of hay fever and asthma and will develop less animal related allergies. Recent studies also show that the immune systems of children that have pets are more better aboe to fend off illness.

There are many other ressons why our beloved pets are more than our best firends and we should appreciate then more

Walk To Heel Can Stop Dogs Pulling On Lead

By teaching your dog to walk to heel can help stop your dog pulling on the lead. Your dog should be happy to walk at heel, on lead and off. However, your dog cannot be expected to do this if you don't take the time to teach him or where the heel position is.

The heel position is next to your left or rights leg and the dog close to your knee. You can also link this command to others, such as 'sit' or 'down'. If you have more than one dog, it would be the dominant dog that will try to get there first. The other dog will then make do with walking close to your right leg. Just go along with this arrangemnt shuould make it much easier to control the dogs.

For more information on training the heel position, go to my FQA on my website.

Chinese Fur Farms

This needs to be STOP NOW

Cnina supplies more than half of the finished fur garments imprted for sale in the United States. Investigators went undercover in the Chinses fur farms; they found that many animals are turned on their back, hung up by their legs or tail and then skinned a live. When the fur farms begin to cut into the skin and fur from the animals legs, the fee limbs kick in agony. Workers stamp on the necks and heads of the animals who struggle to hard.

Once the fur is finally peeled off over the head of the animal, their bloody bodies are thrown into a pile of other skinned animals. Some of them are still alive, breathing for up to 10 minutes after they are skinned. One of the investigators recorded a skinned racoon dog that was still alive after being skinned, lying on a heap of carcasses, found strength to lift his blooded head and stare into the camera.

Dogs used to Intimidate

There is concern that a number of illegal dogs are on the streets and rising. Young men are using vicious breeds as weapons of intimidation and status symbols. Gordon Shepherd, 25, a part time DJ, said he likes it when he takes his pit bull and Rottweiler crossbreed called Rocky out for a walk and people are scared of him.

It make me feel powerful when people move out of my way. I have trained Rocky to bite anyone I point out straightaway. Sometimes you have to beat it into the dog, train your dog to be violent; I hit it into him to be violent. Its just as good as having a knife the damage he could do to a person it used in the right way.

The RSPCA says that dogs are bein treated for stab wounds, burns and broken bones because they are being used in street fights. Dogs are becoming a big part of gang culture.

Where breeding French mastiffs is legal, they are band from being breed under the dangerous dogs act 1991, cross breeding of four types of fighting dogs in the UK, include pit bull teriers.

The RSPCA is calling for the government to look into the current dog legislation so that more responsibility goes on the owners. In most cases its not the dogs that are the problem it's the owners.

It would be good to hear your comments on this issue good or bad

Dog owner convicted of neglect

An owner of a border collie has been found guilty of neglect. Ronald West, of Donald Road Brighton was convicted for allowing his five year old dog Taz to reach anatomising 88lb in weight. Ronald West ignored orders to improve his dog’s heath.

Animal welfare officers, who visited 62 year old Ronald West at his flat last December, said they found dog faeces in every room. He said he had been unwell and couldn't clean up the poo or walk his dog. Officers ask Mr West to get advice from a vet to help with Taz over weight, to exercise and clip his dog overgrown claws. But Mr West failed to improve his dog’s condition and Taz became fatter.

After the hearing, Geoffrey Theobald a Brighton councillor said all dogs need a good healthy diet and lots of exercise.

Dog High on Drugs

Valerie Bailey a pensioner in Berkshire became suspicious when her dog a West Highland Terrier Holly started to sleep in late. Mrs Bailey said they noticed a lot of smells coming into the house. My husband and I got headaches and developed a terrible cough.

Our little dog (Holly) seems to always be drugged and we had a job getting her up in the mornings, She seemed to always want to sleep. We became very suspicious, it had been three weeks since the people had moved in next door, and the curtains were always closed.

We alerted the police and when they raided the home next door in Royal Avenue, Calcot, Reading, on Wednesday, police officers found 200 cannabis plants worth the street value of £50,000. The drugs have been destroyed and the cannabis factory shut down.

How Many Black Birds in the Tree

There was I in the garden sitting in the Sunshine, Mica chewing on her Kong enjoying the warmth. I hear the sound of the pond water fountain; I hear the birds sing while going about their business. Then I see a female black bird with a green caterpillar wriggerling in her beak. She hops into our Conifer trees, and I hear chirping. In and out of the trees the male and female Black birds go, feeding their little ones. Then I got the chance when they both took time out from feed the young, and snap this little picture. Are little darlings.

Barking dog warns owners of house fire

A woman and her daughter were alerted by their barking dog of a fire in their home. The mother and daughter escaped unhurt from the house in Seaton Place early on Monday. The woman was warned by her dog barking an investigating about the fire is taking place. A 26 year old man and a 15 year old boy were arrested on suspicion of arson.

Why do dog bark? Dogs have a language all of their own and can mean many different things.

Dangerous Dog as status symbols

It is sad in this day an age that dog are being use as a status symbol or weapons. The current Act is to unclear, there has been an increase in dangerous dogs since the act came into force in 1991. New guidelines have been sent to police and authorities.

The need to be stricter checks on owners and may be a dog licences should be put into place. Also stiffer penalties on animal crudity and keeping dog for criminal use. Figures are showing the number of dog attacks had tripled since 1991, and a lot of these attacks have been blamed on cross-bred dogs which are not illegal.

NHS figures for 2008 showed that 3,800 attacks were taking place a year, things are out of control. There are four different breeds of dogs banned - pit bull terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and the Fila Brasilerio. But what are the rules over what is a dangerous dog; it’s hard even when it comes to identifying the banned breeds.

Councils in South London have begun targeting dog owners for using their dog for intimidation, nuisance and using them as a weapon. They have introduced a registration scheme link to the tenancy conditions, this is going to promote responsible dog ownership, and we will take out sanctions on those people who aren’t responsible.

Also in January London’s Metropolitan police created a new unit to tackle the number of dogs being used by criminals.

Dog Fouling

There have been many reports lately on dog owners letting their dogs fouling the streets and parks. Part of dog ownership is making sure we clean up after our dogs. It dose not take much effort, just a poo bag, some people use freezer bags which are just as good and can be cheaper. In most places there are dog bins in the street, but if you are un-lucky not to have them, then take a carrier bag and once you get home, it can be put in your own bin. Anti dog people can make it hard for us dog owners, so let’s not make it any harder for our four-legged friends, and be a responsible dog owner.

Horse Bitten by Staffordshire Bull Terrier

A horse was bitten around the neck and hind quarters at a show event in the council-owned park in Londonderry on Sunday. The horse was being led by a young girl when the dog attacked, the horse owner Kelda Margon said it was a frightening experience for everyone. The dog wasn’t on a lead and it was with a group of six teenage lads who thought the attack was funny. They did not care who got hurt , it could have been a child. The dog continued to attack ,and only stopped when he couldn’t keep up with the horse when she started to jump around. It is scary to see how dangerous a dog can be in the wrong hands and not trained.
A spokesman for Derry City Council said: Council Policy is that all dogs should be kept on leads at all times. This matter will be fully investigated if the people will contact the council and we urge them to do so.

Dog cliff escape

Margaret Williamson from Belfast was on holiday in Ballycastle when her dog Laddy a Springer spaniel went missing. Laddy went missing on Saturday a week ago when my husband was out for a walk, we searched everywhere all around the cliff. We placed posters all over Ballycastle; we would stay at the caravan site not wanting to leave without Laddy. On Easter Sunday man in a boat spotted the dog out on rocks and tried to get him to swim out to his boat, but Laddy refused. The boat man contacted the Coastguard and they rushed to the dogs rescue. A cliff technician scaled the cliff and winched Laddy to safety.

Move over Lassie, Laddy is Northern Ireland's new wonder dog.
The miracle hound fell 130 ft off a cliff on the Antrim coast and survived for eight days, trapped in a cave. We are happy to have recovered Laddy, we used a harness and winch to get it back to the top of the cliff. Laddy was very dehydrated; he had hurt his leg and lost a lot of weight, but some how he survived. We found the number of the owner in a local chip shop and contacted them. The family is delighted to have Laddy back.

Chocolate is dangerous for dogs

Death by Chocolate

Its that time of the year again where there is a lot of chocolate around, yes its Easter. We need to be very a wear about leaving chocolate about. Children getting Easter Eggs should be a fun time but just remember if you have a dog to tell older children to keep the chocolate out of the reach of the dog. With younger children it is best that you are around to make sure it just the child that is eating the chocolate. Chocolate can posion your dog, your dog will experience intestinal distress and potentially other symptoms if he eats 240 kg of dark chocolate (8.5 ounces). Even a level as less than 1.1 pound my create symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. If your dog gets his paws on too much chocolate, contact your vet immediately so they can help. Remember Chocolate can kill your dog.
