It never amazes me what dogs can be trained to do. A guide dog in County Durham saves her owner's life on a daily basis by detecting whether he is close to a diabetic collapse.
Zeta was being trained as a guide dog but accident cursed her to go lame, so could not carry on. Her owner Kearton then decided to train her to help her husband. Zeta had save Kearton husband on more than one occasion.
Zeta was trained to traces the differences in her husband’s sweat, which would be either high or low in blood sugar; this was done on a ball of a handkerchief. Zeta learned to detect the difference in the smell and was rewarded with a treat. It took about two weeks for her learn what she had to do, to alert Kearton husband that his sugar was low, so he took his medication. She is not always 100% accurate but she seems to understand she needs to act on the side of caution.
