Winter is coming and this means thunderstoms, dose your dog get very upset during thunderstorms, many sympathetic owners try and comfort their pooches with this anxiety, but consoling your pet may not help but make things worse. Thunderstorm anxiety is very common among dogs, they start shaking, and panting and pacing the floor getting very nervous and even send them hiding under your bed or even tearing up furniture. Studies show the stress hormone cortisol to be up to three time’s normal levels while the dogs heard recordings of a thunderstorm. In dogs that lived in households with other dogs, their response was not as high and seemed to come back to normal more quickly. Please don’t go out and get another dog, but talk to your vet about behaviour options or medications, vets say medications may be more effective.
If you have a dog with thunderstorm anxiety I would like to hear your story and how you deal with. I may even post it on my web site.
