Edward a 2 year old golden retriever is a lifesaver for his owner Wendy Hillings age 59 from West Yelland, near Barnstaple. Wendy suffers from a condition which leaves her skin very fragile and prone to blistering badly, and also has throat problems which can lead to her being unable to breathe.
Edward helps her with every day tasks like taking her cost off, emptying the washing machine and retrieving money from the cash machine. He has also fetched help when she had breathing problems. Edward has been with Wendy since he was nine weeks old and has been trained to obey more than 100 commands.
He has transformed my life; he has gone for help if I have needed it in the middle of the night, waking my husband. Edward takes the pressure off my husband; it’s nice that my husband can go out with me as my husband and not as my carer. As a carer Edward gets direct payment from Devon County Council to help with his upkeep. Edward was provided to help Wendy by the charity Canine Partners, giving people like Wendy a fuller life. There are 300 people on the charity waiting list for dogs like Edward.
